Mariah Carey is a solo legend in her own right, but the multi-octave diva has made a career of putting together some of the most eclectic and interesting collaborations in recent pop music history. From soulful R&B to strange rap, Mariah is the collabo queen. We opened the butterfly vault to look back at some of MC's greatest duets of all time (Inspired by "#Beautiful" with Miguel).
"Fantasy" Remix feat. ODB
"Me and Mariah/Go back like babies with pacifers." In 1995, Mariah shocked the world by hooking up with Wu-Tang's Old Dirty Bastard. A New York collabo made in Puffy remix heaven. MC''s good girl-next-door veneer was slowly but surely chipping away with this track and the real diva was coming out.
"The Beautiful Ones" feat. Dru Hill
MC and Dru Hill joined forces to cover a Prince classic. The slinky "Beautiful Ones" was one of the standout cuts from 1997's Butterfly.
"The Roof" feat. Mobb Deep
After recording with ODB, it was only a matter of time before Mariah snagged vocals from another NY rap establishment, Mobb Deep. "The Roof" turned Mobb Deep's classic "Shook Ones (Part II)" beat into a sultry song about unrequited love.
"Breakdown" feat. Krayzie Bone & Wish Bone
Mariah not only got Krayzie and Wish to lend vocals on "Breakdown," she enlisted Jermaine Dupri and Redman (wearing a really strange magician costume) to appear in the video. A classic 90s cross-genre emo fest.
"When You Believe" with Whitney Houston
In the late 90s, the diva beef between Mariah and Whitney Houston was too real. The two songstresses put the rumors of ill will to bed by appearing on a beautiful duet for the The Prince of Egypt soundtrack.
"One Sweet Day" feat. Boyz II Men
In 1995, you could not escape the sappy sad song "One Sweet Day." The song about not saying what you wanted to spent a whopping 16 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 and is the longest running number one song in US chart history.
"Endless Love" with Luther Vandross
Classic Luther meets classic Mariah Carey. Two of the most beautiful voices of our time combined on the gorgeous "Endless Love," a cover of Lionel Richie and Diana Ross. Many wedding and prom dances in 1994 were set to this one.
"Always Be My Baby" (Remix) feat. Da Brat and Xscape
Catch a very young Kandi and Tiny of Xscape providing background vocals for Mariah on the "Always Be My Baby" remix. Puffy jackets and unflattering hats; the 90s were a strange time.
"Thank God I Found You" (Make It Last Forever remix) feat. Nas and Joe
This song was right smack in the era when Mariah wore less and less clothing and sat on more and more rappers' laps. Ignore the weird cuddle session with DJ Clue and "urban cowboy" get up in the music video and the song is pretty nice.
"Up Out My Face" feat. Nicki Minaj
