"You Don't Know What To Do" Emerges as Early Standout from "Me. I Am Mariah"

1

Mariah Carey And Wale Just Debuted Your New Summer Jam. Mariah debuted the song live alongside featured artist Wale while most of your faves were still Instagramming their breakfasts.  What's important is that "You Don't Know What To Do" has the breezy, throwback bounce that we've come to expect from the singer. Like, it will fit into my "SUMMER OF MIMI" playlist so perfectly, right in between "Honey" and "Heartbreaker." (MTV)

The energy in the performance was what really made it stand out. Carey's backup dancers twirled with an enthusiasm that bordered on hyperactive and she herself articulated every line with the gestures and sways of her body, elevating what could have otherwise been a pretty routine performance to a new level of entertainment. (Bustle)

The single is a lush, appealing dance track that rides the wave of the disco revival that has lately been led by Daft Punk, Justin Timberlake, a posthumous MJ, and others. Carey's vocals, great production, and a catchy chorus make it perfect for the summer season. (Slate)

When Carey debuted the song on TODAY, the resulting performance was kind of elaborate. She was draped on a baby grand, flanked by doting men and wearing a long, fingerless glove on just one hand. In comparison, "You Don't Know What to Do" is as much of a no-brainer as "#Beautiful" (hashtag and all) was last year. It's a breezy and effortless disco throwback with a hook that everyone can sing; Carey sounds less concerned with vocal acrobatics than actually having a good time. (Idolator)

It's playful and easily the best new track we've heard from "Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse." It shows off Carey's great chops, her attitude and has a fun, catchy great R&B chorus easy to sing along with. (HitFix)

With Mimi crooning atop a grand piano, the track opens with her belting over a gorgeous piano improv. But the percussion soon kicks in and the D.C. rapper comes in for his first verse. The rest of the track is laced with funky guitar strums, brass horn blasts and a silky, repetitive hook. The song's best moment might be in the last 15 seconds when Mariah & Co. end the song with a powerful group vocal attack, "You don't know what you're doing to me! You don't know what you're doing to me! You don't know!" (Fuse)

This collaboration with Wale is absolutely wailin'! You Don't Know What To Do is going to easily become one of our favorite summer songs! The song is brilliant! It's a little bit disco, a little bit Wale, and a LOT of Mariah's voice and we LOVE it! (Perez Hilton)

Mariah Carey debuted disco throwback song "You Don't Know What To Do" (from Me. I Am Mariah...The Elusive Chanteuse) earlier on Today. This is exactly the kind of stuff she should be making. If this is a single, it could be the song of the summer (or at a personal summer jam favorite). You've been warned. (Gawker)

The track is off of Mariah‘s upcoming album Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse and it made its radio debut this morning. We sure think this could be one of the songs of the summer! (Just Jared)

Mariah does her thing flawlessly as usual on top of the beat making something infectious and addictive, while the MMG wordsmiths adds a hip hop appeal and smooth touch. This should not be slept upon. (Stupid Dope)

It's becoming more and more clear that the diva is schooling us by letting us know she's saved the best material for album launch date. Case in point: the feel-good, throwback 90s jam ‘You Don't Know What To Do' featuring Wale, that she debut on The Today Show this morning! This is what Mariah is known for. This is how we fell in love with her. THIS is how we will remember her. ‘You Don't Know What To Do' literally sounds like it was taken off ‘Emotions' or ‘Music Box'. (Raw Music Entertainment)
